Before building Zerodha, Nithin Kamath spent years trading in financial markets. That experience exposed him to the costs and service limitations faced by active traders—and gave him a practical business problem to solve.
In 2010, he started Zerodha alongside his brother, Nikhil Kamath. The initial ambition was focused: serve an online community of active traders who wanted a better brokerage experience.
Zerodha developed without external venture capital. In a 2023 interview with Blume Ventures, Nithin explained how customer conversations, online communities and word of mouth helped the business earn trust.
An important shift came around 2015. Zerodha introduced its own technology products, while Aadhaar-enabled online onboarding reduced friction in opening accounts. Nithin identified this combination as a moment when the company’s ambitions expanded.
His journey offers a useful lesson for entrepreneurs: first-hand knowledge of a customer’s problem can become the foundation of a business. Zerodha’s story also illustrates how product development, patient execution and favourable market conditions can work together over time.
